Being Charitable
December is a month when people think of giving. Many make donations to charities or attend charitable events. Children learn by example. If you want your children to care about others and be charitable, then it is important to show them you are involved in giving selflessly. Teach your children that there are those who are less fortunate than them, and that there are ways that they can make a difference in others lives. Even a very young child can understand that some children may not get toys this year for Christmas. When encouraging your child to be charitable, keep these points in mind.
Keep it simple. Have them donate cans to a food drive, clothes to a clothes drive, or bring a toy over to a Toys for Tots collection bin this holiday season.
Peak their interest. Let them choose something that is of interest to them. There are many kid friendly causes out there or perhaps your child would like to create his/her own cause. If they are interested in what they are doing to help, they will stay involved until the project is complete. Check out Pennies for Peace they have created program for kids to be involved in.
Make it memorable. Take your child with you to help with your charitable events. Children remember the things that their parents do.
It does not take much effort to teach your child the true meaning of giving this holiday season. Show your child how being charitable can help others.
