Find the ‘Best’ Studying Time

Homework teaches responsibility, reinforces what is being taught in the classroom, and connects home and school. Although most kids find it a chore, teachers are not going to stop assigning homework. So, the completion of homework will help your child be successful in school. It is important to keep in mind that children have different times of the day when they are most productive. As your child gets older, and has to become more independent with homework, keep in mind that he/she may be and “Night Owl” or an “Early Bird.”

Early Birds-This child is an early riser and needs sleep before he/she can study. This is a child that is most productive in the morning before school.

Night Owls-This child works better in the late evening hours. This is a child that needs to rest his/her brain right after school, maybe have a meal, and then can begin homework.

Be aware of when your child is at his/her thinking best. Consider background noise too. Some children work well with music playing while others need complete silence. Suggest a study time that you think is best for your child. It may be that right after school, with a snack, while everything is fresh on his/her mind is your child’s prime time for successful studying.
