5 Little Pumpkins
Poetry is a great way to build your child’s phonemic awareness. This classic Halloween poem encourages phonemic awareness, the understanding of ordinal numbers, and dramatic play. Teachers like to use this poem during the month of October. Reciting the same poem at home reinforces what is being taught at school. Adding hand movements to the poem makes it more fun to perform and gives it physical movement (for the kinesthetic learner) to help remember the words. Below is the poem with some suggested hand movements. You could also make up hand movements with your child as an activity.
5 Little Pumpkins sitting on a gate, Hold up 5 fingers.
The first one said, “My it’s getting late.” Put hands on either side of face.
The second one said, “There are witches in the air.” Place hand over eyebrows “looking.”
The third one said, “But we don’t care!” Shrug.
The fourth one said, “Let’s run and run and run!” Pump arms like when running.
The fifth one said, “Isn’t Halloween fun?” Wring hands.
Then “Ooooooooooooo” went the wind, Cup hands around mouth.
and out went the lights, Clap.
and the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight. Roll fists over one another.
Have a Happy Halloween!
